Look what we made!

Y4 Science investigation. Do baked beans create wind?

This week we have tried to find out if baked beans cause wind. We mashed up bananas and weetabix with water and put it into two bowls. We added a can of beans to one bowl. Both bowls were covered with cling film and left in the classroom for 4 days. We hoped that it would be really obvious if beans make wind. We thought the cling film would stretch upwards and look like a balloon.

Banana and weetabix mashed up with water and left for 4 days.

The same mixture with baked beans added. Also left for 4 days.

Both bowls look similar, but if you look closely there is some evidence that beans make wind because there are some bubbles of gas rising to the surface.

Investigation results.

It is hard to see the one in the milk. We didn't open the jar because the milk was bad. 1 (milk) & 3 (water) were unaffected. The next, least effect was sugar free lemonade. Squash had changed the colour of the shell, lemonade had begun to take off the surface of the shell and the shell was brittle. Vinegar had completely dissolved the shell so that only the thin inner membrane was left. Everyone now has a good understanding of how teeth can be damaged by various liquids (and foods).

The children really enjoyed this investigation and had lots of ideas about what other liquids they could test. Maybe you could try some at home?

Science investigation.

Year 4 are trying to find out how a range of liquids affect our teeth. We set up an investigation and will look at the results next week. Please have a chat at home and try to predict what will happen to the egg shells in the different liquids.

From left to right they are lemonade, milk, water, diluted squash, vinegar and sugar free lemonade.

We'll share our results next week.

Our day at Beacon Fell.

4WG had a fantastic day at Beacon Fell, thanks to Mr Harvie and his team.

We made it to the summit in time to have our minutes silence there.

One of the favourite places was the play area, even though (& possibly because) it was very muddy!

A highlight on all the trips is the hot chocolate made by Mr Harvie, using his famous 'Kelly Kettle'.

The children also enjoy building dens. Some work really hard with this and are quite rightly very proud of the results.

A fabulous day, which we all enjoyed very much.

Roman day!

A great selection of Roman costumes for our Roman day. Well done!

Some of the outfits complete with the helmets the children produced.

We hope that parents enjoyed visiting us to see all the things the children have been doing. They certainly enjoyed sharing with you, especially performing the Spartacus drama and the 'Like a Roman' song. Thank you for coming along.

Roman Villas.

The children were offered the option to build a model of a Roman villa as a home learning task. Here is Marcel's.

Here is Toby's.

It's so exciting when these lovely models come into school. Well done boys!

Roman style prints.

This week the children have designed and made printing blocks. These have been used to create prints in the style of Roman artwork. As you can see, everyone has contributed to a border frieze as well as producing their own page of printing. A very busy afternoon!

Welcome!

This is the new Blog for 4WG, where you will be able see what we've been busy doing.
